Food blogger Elisa of Happyskinkitchen talks to Apibal about her skin struggles and love of bee pollen!

Elisa, founder of HappySkinKitchen started her blog as a way of sharing her passion for healthy cooking and her struggle with hormonal acne. “I never had acne or spots, not even when I was a teenager and my skin has always been pretty flawless, never requiring any particular attention or maintenance. My breakouts were mostly on my chin and jaw area and they were almost like a cyst, they were red and angry and were definitely affecting my self confidence and overall happiness.”

“I decided to do my own research and try to find my own cure for my hormonal acne. I went online and I started to learn how food can have a massive effect on how our skin looks. I know this  might sound really obvious but at the time I had no idea how certain foods can be potent triggers for acne, spots or breakouts. All I knew was that chocolate is bad for you, that was as far as my nutrition knowledge would go!”

“Desperate to see an improvement in my skin I gradually transitioned to a mostly plant based diet and that has proven to be the best choice I have ever made for my skin and for my overall health. It wasn’t easy and it didn’t happen overnight as I always been a serious food lover. I decided that I would still have tasty food but with a “skin friendly” spin. I got seriously inspired by so many amazing food bloggers out there and taught myself how to cook delicious, healthy and full of goodness meals which my skin will thank me for.”

Bee Pollen has long been associated with healthy skin and  used as a natural acne  treatment, in fact celebrity Victoria Beckham revealed  to Vogue UK that she takes a daily dose of bee pollen as part of her skincare regime. However common forms of bee pollen such as granules are difficult to digest because you need to crunch your way through the tough outer shell to get to the nutrients inside. Apibal freeze-cracked bee pollen eliminates the need to do this, as it is developed using a unique freeze-cracking process that unlocks the goodness inside, without damaging its nutrients by traditional heat grinding.

There are many reasons why people take bee pollen for healthy skin and we’ve listed a few below. Source: http://www.beepollenhub.com/bee-pollen-for-acne/

Bee Pollen  Offers Essential Fatty Acids

One of the reasons that using bee pollen for acne is effective is because bee pollen offers essential fatty acids. Both Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are included in bee pollen, offering a good balance of these fatty acids.

Having a healthy supply of both fatty acids provides a balance that can help to treat acne outbreaks and prevent further attacks. Along with healthy eating habits, bee pollen can prove effective for acne treatment.

Vitamin B Helps Reduce Skin Inflammation

Bee pollen can help treat your acne problem with the vitamin B that it contains. Vitamin B is known to help fight off inflammation and often inflammation of the skin, which occurs with acne, is caused by a deficiency in this vitamin. When you take bee pollen for acne, you’ll begin building up vitamin B, and that vitamin will help to reduce the inflammation of the skin that causes the acne breakouts, like blackheads and blemishes.

Zinc Works to Treat Blemishes

Many people do not realize that zinc is important for clear skin. Zinc can help to reduce the inflammatory chemicals that are released by the immune system, which occurs in the very early stage of acne. It especially works well at preventing both white heads and blackheads.

Zinc is known to help reduce the production of CRH, which is corticotrophin releasing hormone. CRH is known to increase the amount of oily sebum that is produced by the body, which can clog up pores and result in acne breakouts.

Q & A with Happy Skin Kitchen founder Elisa

– How important are natural food supplements to you?

Natural food supplements have played a huge role in helping to clear my skin. Some of my favourites are bee pollen, probiotics and zinc.

– Being a food blogger do you have a guilty pleasure?

I can never say no to chocolate! Although now I stick with dark chocolate smothered in almond butter.

– Do you have any advice for people trying to eat healthier?

My first advice would be to start with one step at a time. For example start by always making yourself a homemade, nutritious breakfast like overnight oats or a smoothie. It could be overwhelming changing your lifestyle completely when it can be easier and more achievable by committing to one small change at the time.

Elisa’s Bee Pollen Golden Smoothie

Ingredients:

1 frozen banana

1 cup of frozen mango chunks

A handful of raw cashews ( optional but makes the smoothie creamier and thicker)

1 teaspoon of freshly grated turmeric

1 Apibal bee pollen capsule

3/4  cup of coconut milk to blend

Simply place all the ingredients into a blender apart from the coconut milk. Add gradually the coconut milk until you reach the desired consistency. You might not need to use it all.

Pour the smoothie into a bowl and top with the topping of your choice. I have used coconut yogurt, fresh blueberries and passion fruit.

Enjoy!

What is bee pollen?

Over the last few years, we’ve seen a significant rise of the superfood. With celebrity endorsements and the growth of the wellbeing industry, health bloggers and natural foods chefs, it seems they are here to stay. But how can we tell the trends apart from the foods that will nourish us from within?

Bee pollen is a product naturally formed from the pollen that bees collect from plant anthers, bonded together by the secretion from plant salivary glands. It is, in fact, this product that nutritionists believe provides many more health benefits than raw honey, something celebrated by health experts and natural food lovers. Alongside this, bee pollen contains a significant amount of the nutrients needed to nourish the human body for it to thrive, including minerals, vitamins, amino and fatty acids. Furthermore, bee pollen actually contains more protein than any animal source and is considered by many to be one of nature’s most powerful superfoods.

But to date, the potential of bee pollen has been locked away within a largely indigestible outer shell. Meaning you have to crunch your way through spoonfuls at a time, just to get a small percentage of its goodness.

Until now.

At Apibal, we’ve developed a unique process to ‘unlock’ all that goodness – we call it freeze cracking. A delicate process that opens up the shells at low temperatures releasing all the goodness inside.  Our special technique means that all that natural goodness from bee pollen can be released into your body, without using the traditional milling method that generates heat and destroys many of its nutrients.

We want to showcase the full, nourishing potential of bee pollen by bringing you information, recipes and ideas to help you enjoy our Apibal freeze-cracked capsules as part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
