Apibal recently collaborated with Sol Gilbert, the owner of The Underground Gym and the S-GUT system, to produce a competition for one of his lucky followers to win two months supply of our freeze-cracked bee pollen. We talk to him about why nutrition is paramount in leading a healthy lifestyle.
Could you tell us a bit about what S-GUT system is?
Basically, S-GUT system is my way of delivering a combined training system which combines the biomechanics of moving and lifting with a diet that fuels this. Rather than be a trainer in one thing, I wanted to replicate the skill set, based around martial arts, that made me an athlete. To be successful in this field you need to maintain good strength in order to power the explosive movements it entails. For the SGUT system, we took the combination of disciplines that makes an athlete and deliver this to the mainstream environment so everyone can reach peak fitness.
How important is protein in your diet when trying to stay fit and build muscle?
It’s one of the most important factors to consider when looking at your diet as the right amount of protein is crucial for building muscle and for weight management. That’s why I include bee pollen in my diet, it’s great as it ticks so many boxes. Not only is it full of protein, it also boosts the metabolism and promotes a healthy gut which is great for weight loss.
When you’re training your clients do you discuss the importance of nutrition as well as exercise and, if so, why?
The first thing I discuss with a new client is nutrition. I sit down with them and identify what exactly is going into their body. Is it beneficial to them? If it’s the wrong nutrition then no amount of training will correct that. Sometimes people can identify a couple of things that, with management, can change your whole lifestyle. For example, if a client complains of feeling bloated often I suggest removing gluten for a bit and identifying how that makes them feel. It really depends on the person but the majority of people can feel a million times better and healthier with proper nutrition.
How important is it to include natural food in your diet rather than processed food?
It’s of absolute importance! I always encourage my clients to make their plates as colourful as possible and ensure they are introducing salads and vegetables if they haven’t already. It’s all about educating my clients to be the best they can be. Saying this, we all have our vices and I strongly believe that life is about balance and everything in moderation. Look at reducing something that’s not necessarily good for you down or choose an alternative, there are plenty out there.
What would you advise someone who would like to be healthier but has no experience with the gym?
If someone really feels they are not ready to go to a gym I always suggest that they start by looking at their routine and integrating home workouts. Look at your lifestyle. If you drive to work every day and it’s 2 miles there and back, try and walk there instead or get a bus to work and walk back. Alternatively, you could park two miles away from your work and walk the rest of the way. It’s about starting to make fitness a conscious part of your lifestyle. Look at your diet and write out a list of food and how it makes you feel after you eat them, remove the things that make them feel bad and replace it with a healthy alternative. When you start feeling better in yourself you can start introducing some gentle home workouts. I have specifically created my own workouts on Youtube to encourage people to feel more comfortable exercising. By watching my channel people understand who I am and what I am about which hopefully encourages them to start coming into the gym to work with me.
